Anything is possible, with the sun behind you…

So…this is my attempt to remove as many biblical references as possible so people dont feel like Gorman is preaching. But I was at a small group meeting the other night and my best friend, Bill Rose, gave one of the best messages I have ever heard him deliver in his life.

(Joshua 10:12)”At that time Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel,

(O) “Sun, stand still at Gibeon,
and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
13And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.

So other than the fact that Jesus made the earth stand still Joshua was with his army at the top of a mountain, getting ready to fight a large army at the base of the mountain. With the sun resting over the top of the mountain, people looking up the mountain couldnt see anything because of the sun. Therefore, Joshua, ambushed the armies and won his battle, all because the sun was behind him.

Does that make sense? Moving past biblical reference…

Everyone has a journey. Everyone has a mountain to climb. For Joshua and his army is was about 4000 feet. For you and I it could take our entire life. Regardless of the time of the journey or the motivation behind the journey we all have out end goal/result/destiny. What is the thing holding you back? What is stopping you from rolling down the mountain and conquer your dreams?

Why haven’t you checked if the sun is behind you? Bill Rose used one of the best motivational metaphors I had ever heard. Sorry Dale Carnegie…this guy is stepping in your zone.

Whats keeping your potential from making you kinetic!?

So this guy has put all this energy into getting to the top of the mountain. He has all the potential in the world to travel back down the other side but all he needs is a little push. All any of us need is a little push to get down that mountain and take care of our wildest dreams.

Joshua got to the top of the mountain, asked Jesus to stop the sun, and thats all he needed was that little help, that little push to help him fight his downhill battle to free his people.

What do you think about that? I would say the only thing holding you back….is yourself!

Real talk.

  1. Old friend says:

Agreed. We hold ourselves back. Why do we stay at the top of the hill? Because we are afraid of reaching our potential and achieveing our dreams. Because with great potential comes great responsbility and with great responsibility comes sacrifice. There is a battle at the bottom of the hill. Joshua knew that his victory would be costly. Victory requires courage. Joshua 1:8 Be strong and courageous. The courage comes from facing the greatness of God in us to become powerful men and women. In facing our fears and heading into battle, we must sacrifice our selfishness for the greatness that could be. No man ever became truly great without sacrifice, without maturing in responsiblity, without battling. Many people will stay at the top of the mountain looking out at a destiny of greatness. Only a few will have the courage to face the battle, sacrifice their selfishness, and take on the great responsibilty that comes with great victory.

    Nelson Mandela once said:

“Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate,
but that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
    gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just in some; it is in everyone.

And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give
other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our fear,
    our presence automatically liberates others.

I have walked that long road to freedom.
    I have tried not to falter;
I have made missteps along the way.
But I have discovered the secret
that, after climbing a great hill,
one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.
I have taken a moment here to rest,
to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me,
to look back on the distance I have come.
But I can only rest for a moment,
    for with freedom comes responsibilities,
    and I dare not linger,
for my long walk is not ended.”
